Superwhisper alternative for Mac

A Superwhisper Alternative That Answers Back

Crodo is a free Mac dictation app with nothing to configure - and the same hotkey is a voice assistant for your screen, meetings, inbox, and calendar. Here is a straight comparison, including the one place Superwhisper flatly wins.

Free · Zero configuration · macOS 14.2 or later · Apple silicon

Pick Crodo if

you want dictation that works the minute it installs, plus an assistant that answers questions, writes meeting notes, and reads your inbox - for free.

Stay with Superwhisper if

offline, on-device processing is your deciding factor, or you love tuning per-app modes and prompts. On privacy, it flatly wins.

Need Windows or cross-platform?

Neither of us covers Windows. Wispr Flow does - we compared ourselves against it just as honestly.

Side by side

Crodo vs Superwhisper

Two different philosophies: Superwhisper gives you every knob. Crodo removes them and spends the difference on an assistant.

Where Crodo is different

No knobs. More reach.

Superwhisper is a precision tool for people who enjoy configuring precision tools. Crodo bets that most people want to hold a key, talk, and have the rest already decided - and that a voice tool should do more than type.

Zero configuration

Superwhisper's depth is real, but you pay for it in setup: choosing models, building modes, writing prompts. Crodo has one decision - which key to hold. Cleanup, dictionary, and formatting are on by default.

An assistant, not just a transcriber

The same hotkey that types for you also answers questions, reads what is on your screen, and opens apps. Superwhisper turns speech into text - very well - and stops there.

Your inbox and calendar in the same voice layer

Connect Gmail, Google Calendar, and Slack, then ask “what came in this morning?” or “am I free at three?”. No dictation tool, Superwhisper included, plays in this category.

Meetings that stay askable

Both apps can record a meeting. Crodo also writes the summary, decisions, and action items automatically - and weeks later you can ask “what did we decide about pricing?” out loud and get an answer.

Where Superwhisper is ahead

Credit where it is due.

A comparison page that only lists the other product's weaknesses is an ad. These are the real reasons to stay - and the first one is a big one.

Fully local, fully offline

Superwhisper runs speech recognition on your Mac. No internet needed, nothing leaves your machine on local models. If you handle confidential work - legal, medical, security-restricted - this is not a nice-to-have, it is the whole decision. Crodo cannot match it.

One-time purchase

Superwhisper offers a lifetime license (listed at $249.99 when we checked) alongside its subscription. If you are allergic to subscriptions, that option exists there and not here - though Crodo is simply free.

Power-user modes

Per-app modes with their own prompts and model choices are Superwhisper's most-loved feature. Dictating code into a terminal and prose into an email can behave differently. Crodo has no equivalent.

File transcription and language depth

Superwhisper Pro transcribes audio and video files and advertises 100+ languages with CSV vocabulary import. Crodo does live dictation only, and we don't advertise a language count we haven't tested.

The privacy question

They're local. We're cloud. Decide on that honestly.

Superwhisper's headline feature is that your audio never has to leave your Mac. Crodo cannot claim that: dictation and every assistant feature go through cloud processing, and the app needs an internet connection. If you picked Superwhisper for exactly this reason, our advice is to keep it.

Why Crodo is cloud anyway

The assistant half - answering questions, reading your screen, writing meeting notes, working with your inbox and calendar - needs a large model, and that lives in the cloud. No local model does all of that today. It is a deliberate trade for what the app can do, not an oversight.

The practical line we'd draw

Confidential-by-obligation work - client files, patient notes, anything a compliance team would ask about - belongs on a local tool. For everyday email, docs, tickets, and meetings, cloud dictation is the norm, and it is what most people already use through Wispr Flow, their browser, or their phone.

Switching

Ten minutes. No models to download.

01

Download Crodo and sign in. Free, no card, no model downloads - there is nothing to configure.

02

Set your dictation hotkey. Hold to talk, release to paste - the muscle memory transfers directly.

03

Add your jargon to the Dictionary tab, or correct a misheard word once after pasting and Crodo offers to learn it.

04

Keep Superwhisper installed and run both for a week. If offline processing turns out to be the thing you actually cared about, stay with it - genuinely.

Questions

Before you switch.

Is Crodo a good Superwhisper alternative?

It depends on why you are leaving. If Superwhisper's model-and-mode configuration feels like work, or you want one voice tool that also answers questions, records meetings with automatic notes, and reads your inbox and calendar, Crodo is a strong fit - and it is free. If you chose Superwhisper for local, offline processing, stay: Crodo is cloud-based and cannot offer that.

Is Crodo free?

Yes - free to download and use with no usage cap and no paid tier to unlock the features described on this page. Superwhisper also has a usable free tier on local models; its Pro plan is $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year, or a one-time lifetime license.

Does Crodo run locally like Superwhisper?

No. Crodo sends audio to cloud speech recognition and needs an internet connection. Superwhisper runs entirely on your Mac with local models. If on-device processing is a hard requirement, Superwhisper is the right choice between the two - we would rather say that plainly than earn a download that gets refunded.

Do I have to configure models or modes in Crodo?

No. There are no models to download, no modes to build, and no prompts to write. Cleanup and the custom dictionary work out of the box. The trade-off is control: Superwhisper lets power users tune per-app behaviour in ways Crodo deliberately does not.

Does Crodo have a custom dictionary?

Yes. Add terms in the Dictionary tab, or correct a misheard word right after pasting and Crodo offers to learn it. Learned terms are sent to the speech engine as key terms so they come out right at the source. There is no CSV import today - Superwhisper has one.

Can Crodo transcribe audio or video files?

No. Crodo transcribes live speech - dictation and meeting recordings it captures itself. For transcribing existing files, Superwhisper Pro or MacWhisper are the better tools.

Does Crodo work on iPhone?

No. Crodo is a native macOS app for Apple silicon Macs on macOS 14.2 or later. Superwhisper has an iPhone app.

What does Crodo do that Superwhisper doesn't?

Everything past transcription: ask questions out loud and get answers, screen-aware help, meeting notes written for you (summary, decisions, action items) with past meetings you can query by voice, Gmail, Google Calendar and Slack by voice, long-term memory, tasks and reminders, opening apps, and web search - all on the same hotkey you dictate with.
