Is Crodo better than Apple Dictation?+
For sustained, real work - emails, documents, tickets, anything longer than a sentence - yes: it does not cut off when you pause, it removes filler words and fixes grammar, it learns your vocabulary, and it behaves the same in every app. For a quick offline note, Apple's built-in dictation is genuinely fine, private, and already there. Both are free, so this is purely a capability question.
Is Crodo free like Apple Dictation?+
Yes. Crodo is free to download and use, with no word caps or paid tier for anything described on this page. Neither option costs money - the difference is what they can do.
Why does Apple Dictation keep stopping on me?+
macOS dictation ends the session after roughly thirty seconds of silence, and there is no setting to disable that. Pausing to think is enough to trigger it. Crodo works differently: you hold the hotkey while you speak and release it when you are done, so the recording ends on your decision, not a timer's.
Does Crodo work offline like Apple Dictation?+
No. Crodo sends audio to cloud speech recognition and needs an internet connection. On Apple silicon, the built-in dictation runs on-device for supported languages - that is a real Apple advantage. If on-device processing matters to you and the built-in engine is not accurate enough, look at a local tool like Superwhisper - we compare against it honestly too.
Can I teach it my names and jargon?+
With Crodo, yes - add terms in the Dictionary tab, or correct a misheard word once and it offers to remember it; learned terms go to the speech engine as key terms so they come out right at the source. Apple Dictation has no custom vocabulary.
Does it work in every app?+
Crodo pastes the finished text into whatever app has focus, so behaviour is identical everywhere - Mail, Slack, Chrome, your terminal. Apple Dictation's integration varies by app, which is why it can work in TextEdit and misbehave elsewhere.
Does Crodo really clean up what I say?+
Yes - filler words removed, punctuation, capitalization, and obvious grammar slips fixed, while keeping your wording and meaning. It does not rewrite you or add anything you did not say. Apple Dictation transcribes literally, with automatic commas, periods, and question marks in supported languages.
What does Crodo do that Apple Dictation doesn't - beyond typing?+
The assistant layer: ask questions out loud, screen-aware answers, meeting recording with AI-written notes you can query later by voice, Gmail, Google Calendar and Slack by voice, long-term memory, tasks and reminders, opening apps, and web search - one hotkey for all of it.
